Create a Work Center

System Location: Settings > Tables > Work Center

Work Centers represent areas within a shop where work is performed. They can represent machines or tasks a job must go through during production.

For additional details on the fields covered here, along with information for those that are not, please see Tables > Work Centers in the help file.

  1. Click the Settings button.Settings_Button
  2. Open the Tables dropdown menu.
  3. Select Work Centers.
  4. Click New (located at the top of the page.)

Provide Values

Provide information for the fields listed below at a minimum to take advantage of JobBOSS2's reporting and analysis tools in addition to benefiting from its ability to pass information along from one part of the software to another. The Header Areas referenced can be accessed by scrolling down the page or by clicking the appropriate option in the Header Navigator Bar (pictured.)

Work Center Navigation Bar Header

The User-Defined Section and related information will only be available if the User has been granted adequate permissions within User Maintenance.

General Header

An asterisk [*] indicates a required field.

  1. Provide information as appropriate:
    • *Work Center Number: Must be unique
      • Can be populated by system or entered directly
    • Description: Appears on the traveler printed to accompany the job on the floor
    • *Short Name: Alpha numeric value available to select when creating estimates
    • Department Code: Can be used as a filter on reports and in the Scheduling Whiteboard if available
    • Labor Account: The GL account used to report labor costs for work performed on the work center
    • Default Attendance Code: Used to indicate whether work performed on work center should be considered productive or not
Rates Header
  1. Provide information as appropriate:
    • Setup Rates: Suggested hourly dollar amount to charge for time spent preparing (or setting up) the work center
    • Cycle Rates: Suggested hourly dollar amount to charge for time spent working on customers' items
      • Rates selected here are referred to as Billing Rates
      • Up to ten (10) Billing Rates can be defined in Company Maintenance
        • Can be selected for both setup and cycle values
      • Only defined billing rates will display a label and be available to enter dollar values
    • At least one Setup and Cycle Rate needs to be present on a work center in order for the system to include the estimated time in its calculations of a suggested sales price for estimated items when using the Billing Rate method to do so.
    • Hourly Burden Rate (under Cycle Rates): Estimated hourly (indirect) overhead cost of operating the Work Center
    • Average Hourly Labor Rate (under Cycle Rates): Average hourly (direct) labor cost of operating the Work Center

    It is strongly recommended that an accountant or financial adviser be consulted to help calculate the estimated costs of operating work centers, especially with regards to burden costs.

Schedule Header
  • The Scheduling Application must be purchased in order to have access to the Scheduling Whiteboard.
  1. Provide information as appropriate:
    • W/C Calendar By Day Of The Week: Determines availability of work center for scheduling purposes
      • Select All Weekdays unless the work center has limited availability during the week
    • Loading Method: Determines how jobs are scheduled to the Whiteboard
      • Infinite: Will allow the work center to become overloaded
      • Finite: Will not allow the work center to become overloaded
    • Capacity Factor: The number of machines represented by the work center
    • If Capacity Factor is greater than one, the machines represented must be able to perform the same kind and amount of work in order to avoid possible bottlenecks if using the Scheduling Application.
  2. Click 'Save' to save and close the record.
    1. Use the Save dropdown menu if you want to create a new record or print a report upon saving.
